Flower Bulbs

There is a wide variety of flower bulbs that produce beautiful flowers. If you want a nice cut flower you may want to choose the lily family as they have staying power when cut. Flower bulbs bloom at different time of the year so if you want spring flowering bulbs you will want those that must be planted in the fall such as tulips and daffodils.

You will want to do your homework when you are ready to plant bulbs. They cannot be planted in wet ground as they will rot. Heavy soil will deter uniform growth. Planting at the right depth is important, the bigger the bulb the deeper they must be planted. All bulbs don't have the same water, sun and shade requirements so it is important to find out what the bulbs you choose require. Not meeting the requirements may result in inferior blooms.

Many bulbs can be planted indoors if provided with the correct lighting. Paper White Narcissus are used for forcing early blooms indoors around Easter. Find a reputable nursery company and send for a catalog. You can take your time choosing the bulbs you want to plant. If you don't want a blooming flower bulb you can always get Elephant Ears. Always be sure to chose bulbs that are appropriate for your temperature zone. Some bulbs are not good in hot zones and other will not grow in cold zones. Remember, some bulbs must be dug up and stored for the winter, others never need to be dug up unless it is to divide them.
