Depression in the elderly is more common than most people think. There are several reasons why the elderly may get depressed. One of the more common reasons an older person might get depressed is the loss of their partner. Divorce is not common among the elderly. Many times they have been married or living together for many years, so when one of the loses their partner, they can sometimes go into severe depression. Sickness is another reason older people may become depressed. As you get older your body becomes more weak and fragile. You are not able to do as much as you used to do.
There are many different signs that you may start to see to let you know that there is some depression developing. One of the more common signs is wanting to be alone. Sometimes people may not even notice or feel that they are depressed. This is why you have to look for the telling signs of depression as a friend or child.
Once you have noticed that there are some signs of depression it is the time to get the treatment that is needed. There are many different forms of treatment that you may wish to pursue. There are quite a few meds out there for people to take, but that may not be the best decision. It has been shown that counseling often works better than any medicine you can take.
