Hobbies For Seniors

Seniors that are active have fewer mental, physical and emotional problems. The possibilities for activities and hobbies in which seniors can engage is nearly endless and don't have to cost a lot to enjoy. Just going for walks regularly can help keep joints limber, improve the cardiovascular system and strengthen bones. Other physical activities that seniors might enjoy include swimming, golfing, dancing, bird watching and gardening. The important thing is to keep moving at a pace you can maintain indefinitely. Warm-up and cool-down routines will help to minimize muscle aches.

Keeping the mind limber is another useful function of hobbies. Staying mentally active with crossword or jigsaw puzzles, card or board games or artistic endeavors such as painting or playing a musical instrument will help to keep the mind sharp.

Many hobbies also function as social outlets; being active with a group brings fellowship and accountability. The group will help members stay involved and active. Many seniors find volunteering to be a uniquely satisfying experience that allows them to use their life skills and still feel useful and connected to their community.

If you've never had a hobby before, now is the time to find something that appeals to you. Take an adult education course in astronomy, woodworking, drawing or cooking, learn how to crochet or scrapbook or join a book club or a bowling team. You can always start a collection of something you love, write your memoir or make stained-glass art. The important part is that you discover new interests, make new friends and enjoy your retirement.
