Weight Gain as You Age

Many of us gain weight as we age and this causes serious health risks. As we age, we tend to burn fewer calories of fat as the metabolism slows down, resulting in weight gain. It takes more to satisfy our appetite as we age. We tend to do less and need less energy to digest our food. Effects of stress can also lead to weight gain. Higher intake of junk food contributes to weight gain. Weight gain is also caused due to being less active, lacking proper exercise, and loss of body cells. Genetic family history will also lead to weight gain in certain people.

We remain so much preoccupied with work, family, and society around us that we forget to spend time exercising and maintaining the physical fitness of our body. Weight gain during middle age increases the risk of heart diseases and diabetes. Arthritis is a common problem seen due to weight gain. Weight gain late in life also raises risk of disability if an individual is already obese.

Appropriate food intake, exercise, and more physical activity is the only remedy to prevent weight gain. Research has proved that a routine walking schedule can help prevent extra pounds from adding up as you age. Practicing stress reduction exercises can help reduce the weight gain, as well. Avoid sitting in front of your computer or television for a long period and relaxing too much. Yoga also helps prevent weight gain during middle age.
