Staying Golden in the Golden Years

Entering the 'Golden Years' of life may not seem so golden for many aging senior citizens. There is a lot of time to reflect on their younger years and current state, which may be depressing to some. However, it's very important to be thankful for what you have and what you have had in the past. Live in the now and enjoy every moment.

They say that learning is a lifelong process. Just because a senior has done their schooling and garnered their share of life experiences doesn't mean it needs to stop there. A new wave is occurring among homebound seniors; many are enrolling in telephone-based courses through programs such as DOROT University Without Walls.

Programs like DOROT offer traditional university classes, such as art, philosophy, literature and many more. What better way to stay positive than to keep the mind going and be proactive in this stage in life? Informational classes, such as money management, medicine and internet surfing are also available, which can keep a senior up-to-date. Being involved in the evolving world around you is a great way to feel fresh and positive. One senior enrolled expressed how these classes give her an emotional release and help her to feel a freedom from the four walls of her home.

Seniors who can't participate in such extensive activities can also involve themselves in craft-making. Engaging in crafts keeps the mind busy and distracts from depressing issues. The continuous use of mind and body will maintain an active, healthy and hopefully happy senior.

And most importantly, stay in touch with the community, family and friends. Active interaction through work and play and, of course, family love can make those golden years stay golden.
