Healthy Seniors

The best way to keep healthy as we age is prevention. Learning great habits early is crucial to our quality of life later. Our mental, physical, and emotional health later is largely influenced by our lifestyles earlier. However, even if we didn't lead the healthiest life in our youth, there are many ways seniors can ensure their health and quality of life remains in good shape.

Some of the biggest health problems seniors face are diabetes, heart disease, and hypertension. These killers take the lives of our loved ones much too soon, and with a few lifestyle changes, they can be largely prevented. Studies have shown that a healthy lifestyle leads to a longer life, and even if not free of disease, living healthy will aid in disease not becoming debilitating. Dietary needs change as we age, and as much as we don't like it, its important we take heed. Obesity is a common problem for all of us, but as a senior, the effects of it can be devastating. Medications and treatments for many conditions effect the kinds of foods needed as well as healthy weight. It is important to keep weight under control by eating a variety of high fiber, low saturated fat foods, as well as fruits and vegetables rich in vitamins and nutrients.

It can be difficult to break lifetime habits. Smoking is a vice for many Americans, but reduces life expectancy significantly. Learning to live without cigarettes is a challenge, but well worth it. But probably the single most important thing a senior can do to ensure a good, long life, is staying active. Physical and social activity will keep the heart pumping, healthy oxygen intake, and the mind sharp.
