Senior Women Dealing with Menopause

Menopause can begin as early as the mid forties for some women, or later on in the fifties. Every woman’s body operates on a different time line and not all women experience the same symptoms of menopause. Despite the differences, there are similarities with most women and the more women know about menopause, the more prepared they will be to deal with it when it happens.

There are many physiological changes that occur with menopause due to a change in hormonal balances. These changes can cause an array of symptoms from physical to psychological. Some of the physical symptoms are: Fatigue, hot and cold spells, vaginal dryness, itchy skin, hair loss, insomnia, loss of libido, bone loss and rapid heartbeat. Some of the psychological symptoms are: Mood swings, irritability, lapses in memory, feelings of worthlessness and dread and anxiety.

Many women fear menopause. Some women feel that once menopause starts, it is a milestone that marks the beginning of end of their life. The truth is that menopause is only a change in the body that says you are no longer in childbearing years. Though this may be hard to take for some women, the physical symptoms of menopause can be controlled with hormonal replacement therapy, prescribed by a doctor or hormone replacement aids purchased over the counter.

If the psychological symptoms are the hardest symptoms to deal with, sometimes counseling sessions can help relieve some of the anxiety of going through menopause. Sometimes just knowing that every woman will eventually have to deal with this life change can be a sense of relief.
