Tips for Seniors on Maintaining a Healthy Weight

Maintaining a healthy weight is one of those “easier said than done” challenges for many people, especially those over 50. Though not easy, weight loss comes naturally with a healthy, active lifestyle and the best way to begin employing new habits of diet and exercise is doing it one step at a time. Remember the old Chinese proverb: “The journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step.” The journey may be difficult at first, but think of the rewards you’ll receive once you’ve achieved your goal weight.

No one can do it for you and there’s no magic pill you can swallow to make you instantly slim. That said, living a healthy lifestyle isn’t all that difficult and regular physical exercise coupled with the right diet will definitely improve your chances for a longer, healthier life. It’s a proven fact that you can reduce your chances of a heart attack, stroke or degenerative disease, if you achieve and maintain a healthy weight. Your mental attitude will also improve. Body weight and belly fat will impact your quality of life, so get started now and reap the rewards you deserve.

You should engage in regular aerobic exercise for at least 30 minutes three times per week. This can be fun, if you and a friend join a gym together or walk around your neighborhood. You can visit while getting in shape! You will want to add some strength training exercises to rebuild muscle lost over the years. Exercise also strengthens bones, reducing your risk for osteoporosis and arthritis and you will gain flexibility and endurance. Avoid extremes like fad diets; instead, eat sensibly and stay away from fried foods, rich, high-caloric meals and sugar.
