It is a myth that depression is normal for senior citizens. It is true that many seniors get sad when they loose a loved one or when it becomes harder to maintain themselves. Something that they could do to avoid depression is to exercise. This will help them get active and since exercising brings out good hormones, they are more likely to feel better. When seniors exercise they are more likely to sleep better and to feel better emotionally and physically. An important thing to remember is that they must speak with a doctor before beginning an exercise plan. Another thing a senior should do is to get out of their house and try to connect with others. For example, it might be good to visit relatives and friends. A good social life for the elderly can help them maintain a happier environment so it is important that they meet new people, and not withdraw from friendships just because of their age.
If the elderly person suspects that they need more support than the one they are getting from their relatives and friends they might want to speak to a therapist. Another good outlet is to find a hobby like reading, cooking, yoga, and journaling to help keep distracted from the daily activities. These are all good outlets from the daily routine of a senior. Cutting back on alcohol is also important. Why? Well, even though some of the elderly take it to get in a better mood or to help them get a better night’s rest, alcohol is actually a depressant. Another good way to avoid depression is to take care of your health. For example, it might be wise to get regular check ups and to get enough sleep. A good diet can also maintain senior citizens in better health. This is important because when we are not feeling good or in poor health we tend to get negative feelings.
