Weight Gain in the Middle Age Years

It is very common to notice a gain of weight and extra pounds showing around the waistline. This weight gain is prevalent in women in the age bracket of 40 to 50 years old. During this time of life, it can become more difficult to lose weight. The gain of weight can be altered by maintaining a proper diet and by getting plenty of exercise. Weight gain may also be impacted by genetic factors. There can be health implications if you continue to gain weight during midlife. Excess weight increases the risk for high cholesterol and high blood pressure. There has been evidence that a weight gain during the menopausal timeframe may increase the risk for contracting breast cancer.

It has been proven that eating a healthy diet can slow down the aging process and help prevent the age-related chronic diseases. Eating foods that contain phytonutrients may play an important role in a person’s longevity. Consuming foods and beverages that are rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties may reverse the age-related changes. Foods that contain these compounds are such things as cold-water fish and colored fruits and vegetables. The pro-inflammatory foods such as trans fatty acids and sugars can accelerate the aging process. Foods such as fish that is rich in omega-3 fatty acids should be included in your diet. Eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables a day to provide your body with antioxidants. Drink at least three to four glasses of water every day.

The basics of the Mediterranean diet are eating fruits and vegetables, nuts, using olive oil, consuming red wine in moderation, eating fish two to three times a week and consuming whole grains in pasta and rice dishes.
