Exercise Your Way into an Active Lifestyle

Time to get off that couch and exercise! As our bodies are aging, and sometimes beginning to have joint and/or muscle pain, our aches are just one more excuse not to exercise. However, getting going will lessen stiffness and staying active will give you a new lease on life. Before getting going, plan sensibly. Don’t just rush off to run a marathon, or perform labor intensive activities like chopping wood or shoveling snow.

As you plan your exercise program, make sure to visit your physician. Items to be discussed with the doctor include any heart or chest pain problems, high blood pressure, shortness of breath, diabetes, irregular heart beat, arthritis/joint concerns and foot or knee conditions. If you are beginning a new routine after no exercise, make sure to check with the doctor for any precautions or types of activities you should avoid.

Dress for the weather, paying particular attention to the head and feet. Dress in layers, for warmth and also so that you can adjust to changing conditions.

Exercise helps your body function more smoothly and use oxygen more efficiently. Gaining general better fitness lets you enjoy life more fully. Your muscle condition, heart rate, and circulation all benefit as your body becomes more relaxed and stress-free. You feel renewed and able to cope with daily problems.

Besides the physical benefits of repeated exercise, you begin to feel more confident and better about yourself as your body strengthens. You stand straighter and walk with confidence. Your emotional well-being is enhanced and your depression lifts. You find a friend to exercise with or join a group, making new friends and enhancing your social life.

Your silver years are your best years. Maintain an active lifestyle and enjoy the time.
