Exercising is very important for senior citizens. Most people know that being physically active is good for us, but it is even more essential for seniors. As we age, we often acquire health problems, lose bone density, gain weight, and find ourselves more and more isolated which can lead to depression. But exercise can be helpful with all of these conditions.
As people age, the body becomes less able to recover from injury. A new study found that more than one third of all adults 65 and older suffered at least one fall a year. Falls not only leave you in pain but they can be costly and in some cases deadly. But a little exercise can go a long way to preventing them.
Exercising has some added benefits. Not only does it keep your body in good shape but it can help with feelings of isolation and depression. Group fitness classes offer an opportunity to socialize with like-minded people. Many gyms offer classes specifically designed for seniors. There are also yoga classes, which help maintain flexibility and water aerobic classes, which are great for seniors with sore joints or arthritis as it is no impact. Many community centers offer classes like these as well.
Exercising also lowers blood pressure and weight bearing exercise increases bone density. Bone density is especially important in post menopausal women, as osteoporosis becomes a concern. When we lose bone density this can lead to painful fractures.
Remember that when we feel better, it reflects in every aspect of our lives. We have a better appearance, a better attitude, and in some cases live longer. So get out there and find something that you enjoy that will keep you healthy and happy.
