The attitudes that older people voice on issues that affect them, give society a better barometer as to laws, assistance, and health care, just to name a few. Issues such as where to live, where and when death is acceptable, and sexuality are basic to happiness, survival, and the closest of relationships with a mate.
The first issue, addressing the attitudes of older people on where they want to live in their later years, takes a look at their value towards home care or assisted living alternatives. There is a dividing line of older people’s attitudes. Prior to a life threatening illness the family home is where older people choose to live because of familiar surroundings and being close to friends and family. Older people do not want to be a burden to loved ones at death, and they choose assisted living during this time.
The second issue addresses the right to choose death over living with a terminal illness with pain and suffering. Older people choose not to give a doctor the right in assisted suicide, but the majority of them has living wills and has discussed with their spouse and family their wishes in the event that they cannot communicate. Older people are in favor of allowing a family member to decide when and if life support should be terminated.
The third issue addresses sexual attitudes and the importance of sex in the relationships of both older men and women. Contrary to popular belief, older men and women consider sex to be an important part of their relationships. Health and physical appearance are important for them to consider and they express the need to have more education on the entire subject.
