Depression in the elderly population is an ever growing problem and is something that is often overlooked and under diagnosed. Millions of elderly Americans suffer from depression but few are getting treatment, which is only adding fuel to the fire. By furthering our knowledge on the subject, we can help increase awareness and hopefully prevent other problems that often arise when depression goes untreated.
Depression is a common occurrence in elderly individuals that can be caused by many factors. It can be something that is caused by some other illness, or it can be caused by the many changes occurring in their life. Things such as retirement, loss of social support, death of a spouse, siblings, or children, and change in environment are all things that can lead to depression for the elderly. Only 10% of elderly patients are treated for depression, yet there are over 6 million elderly that reportedly suffer from the disease. This is a strong indication that it is a problem that is not being addressed as often or aggressively as it should be. The elderly also account for 16% of the suicides each year which is further indication that the issue it not being treated properly.
By educating ourselves and the elderly about the signs and causes of depression, we can make huge steps towards fixing the problem. The elderly are an important part of our society and should not be overlooked. We can help make sure that they stay part of our society by putting and end to this ever growing epidemic.
