Computers and the internet have brought a whole new meaning to friendship. Social computing as it is called brings people together from all over the globe. Separation from a friend is less painful since social computing allows you to communicate and update them faster than waiting for a letter. Communicating through the computer can also reduce long distance and overseas phone charges. Online friends are as close as your computer through email, chat programs and social networks.
Real friends are supportive and loyal. They share, laugh and cry with you through all the good and the bad. Although online friendships form a different type of relationship, true friendships may still form. There is less fear of rejection and embarrassment and feelings are more likely to be expressed online. Each type of friendship may serve a different purpose. Some studies have even shown, over time, these differences seem to diminish.
Face to face interactions bring out the true nature of your friendship solidifying each others feelings. Therefore caution must be taken when meeting new friends online. Personal information should not be released to prevent the thief or sexual predator from gaining information you would not have normally given them.
The internet, through computers, has brought online friendships closer. You can easily contact your offline friends when they are physically unavailable. You can share your day, a new recipe, or anything you would normally share in person. You may even be there for them in time of need. Don’t be discouraged if you can’t contact an offline friend. You now have many online friends since you have discovered social computing.
