Elder Nutrition

Good nutrition is important throughout our entire lives.  As the aging process occurs and we grow into our elder years, our body metabolism and nutritional needs remain essentially the same.  However, due to health problems, a more sedentary lifestyle, a decrease in the senses of taste and smell and medications prescribed, nutritional problems may occur.  

It is important to provide the elderly with a well-balanced diet.  The diet should be high in proteins, vitamins and minerals. Consisting of increased fiber, grain products, fruits and vegetables (dark green, yellow, orange, and red), at least three calcium fortified servings of dairy products (low fat) and an adequate intake of fluids (at least 8-8oz cups) daily.  

When trying to figure out a dietary regimen, one needs to consider the likes and dislikes of the elderly. Foods of soft bulk are more easily chewed, swallowed and digested, which is important to the elderly since the mucous production in the body decreases with aging, thereby decreasing the amount of lubricant available to the colon and inevitably causing constipation.

After 8 hours of sleep with minimal intake, a good breakfast is necessary.  A light, easily digested meal that balances physical activity with caloric intake is important.  Each meal should consist of something hot to eat or drink. The evening meal should be nutritional and adequate enough to prevent hunger during the night, but not so large as to cause stomach and indigestion problems.      

Dietary intake, physical activity and health conditions are important aspects in the dietary plan of not only the elderly, but of all age groups.
